Having graduated from Wits University with a B. Proc. and LLB degree, Jane Appasamy began her career in Financial Services as a Legal Advisor at Liberty Life in 1994. Jane achieved the CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation in 1997 and went on to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Estate Planning and Investments. During this time Jane was a CFP examiner for the University of the Free State, (Business Assurance exam). She was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court (SA) in 2001 and continued her career in Financial Services as a Compliance Officer and Transformation officer. In 2009, together with current FAIS Ombud Noluntu Bam, Juanita Moolman and previous Pension Funds Adjudicator, the late Charles Pillay, Jane co-authored a Butterworths/Lexis Nexis publication on the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS). Jane completed a PDBA (cum laude) at GIBS in 2009 and went on to be the beneficiary of a scholarship from BankSETA in 2011 to pursue the International Executive Leadership Development Program at GIBS, which included studying at New York University (Stern School of Business) as well as at the GIMPA campus in Ghana.
During 2010, Jane joined investment bank, Absa Capital in the Compliance Division. During her time there, Jane headed up the Central Compliance & Control Room, where together with her team; Jane was responsible for regulatory and reputational risk mitigation for the bank. This involved dealing with matters relating to compliance with consumer protection legislation such as FAIS and TCF; as well as being the custodian of conflict of interest policies. Her international work experience includes speaking at a Swiss Re conference in Zurich, Switzerland as well as facilitating Governance workshops for Old Mutual Africa in various African countries.
